  7. Netvibes: Spend less time searching and more time working by customizing your browser’s start page with email, feeds, messaging, job boards and much, much more.

Good stuff! I’ll give an extra shout out to Box.net and Media Temple. MT is a good host, now that they seem to have worked out the kinks from the last upgrade (I had database trouble for a few months but it has been recently improved). The features they offer are excellent for webdesigners (host up to 100 domains for $19 a month, with multiple databases…awesome!). Box.net has a great interface and decent transfer speeds…we use them daily to pass files back and forth. Thank you for your time setting up this list.

[...] The Freelancer’s Toolset: 100 Web Apps for Everything You Will Possibly Need is an incredible article that lists anything and everything an aspiring freelancer could need. Everything from keeping yourself organized, writing and design tools, marketing, network…even legal stuff! There are are quite a bunch of invaluable resources listed here…the funny thing is, even though I’m not a freelancer, I do use quite a few things that are listed in my day to day activity! [...]

This is great round-up. I’ve sampled quite a few of these tools and this, for the most part is the pick of the litter.

At least an honorable mention should go to http://www.iteamwork.com (project management), pbwiki.com (wiki) and salesforce.com (crm).

But what I really want is recommendation on a good (free) mailing list manager. I imagine Google must have something?

    Hi John,

I specifically profiled web apps. I am so dependent on the web that even if I had some apps available off-line, I wouldn’t be able to work. So whenever there is an outage, I just take a break. With my ISP, these are long-long breaks :)

Hi – sorry to lower the tone a bit but you might want to be careful about recommending the free version of AVG anti virus (number 47 in your list). As they say on their site:
“AVG Anti-Virus Free is for private, non-commercial, single home computer use only. Use of AVG Anti-Virus Free within any organization or for commercial purposes is strictly prohibited.”
If you’re after a completely free anti virus client, Clamwin is good – http://www.clamwin.com/ – but doesn’t offer on-access scanning (checking for a virus when you open a file), you have to manually scan files first. Failing that, the non-free version of AVG is very reliable and reasonable in price!
Thanks for this list, though – it’s really useful.

I’d just like to point out that Breeze, the newsletter management program, is just a more expensive resell of campaignmonitor.com, which is the actual product, made by Freshview, a company based in Sydney.

At least I hope it is, because it has exactly the same text on its pricing page as on that of Campaign Monitor. Take a look at campaignmonitor.com/pricing/ and feelbreeze.com/pricing/. The only difference seems to be that the latter is $5 more expensive per mailout.

So I would suggest you replace Breeze with Campaign Monitor in this list. I’ve nothing to do with Freshview by the way. Just recommending it as a happy customer.

[...] I think we can all agree that the ‘web2′ or what ever you want to call it is changing the way that we are doing business. Apps are moving way from desktop to the net, blurring the once distinct line between applications and the web. These sites are are giving greater flexibility to the new workplace. This web based approach reduces the cost of ownership, increasing the availability while reducing internal IT infrastructure issues. There are some really great apps out there that are really worth looking into. I think that these will certainly expand your definition of what the web can provide for business. This one from the Aviva Directory came out a while back and was a trim 25 great apps for entrepreneurs. This list is very useful and has some really great apps with excellent description that get down to the essence of the offering. This list is recent and it has 100 apps to look at. Fantastic list. Thanks for putting it together. I would like to add another great product for “Client Contact & Feedback”. It is SendOutCards, which is another Web-based system for sending out actual greeting cards (not e-cards) to your clients. It has thousands of cards, you can upload images to be printed in the cards and you can create your own cards using the image upload. The messages are not handwritten, but you can fill out a form and your handwriting is scanned into the system and becomes a font choice. You can do this as many times as you want. You can also create multiple card campaigns where a series of cards are sent out automatically on the schedule you set. Try it out:

    http://www.sendoutcards.com/14124
    username: webstream
    password: webstream145

Then you can setup a gift account and send a few cards for free.

Great list! However, you recommend “Planzo.com” as web calendar. I was using that one until 2005 when the support team disappeared. As far as I know, it is a dead app though still online. I would highly recommend that you check out Airset.com. I’ve tried nine different web calendars app and Airset has excellent integration for teams (including families). It also ties into mobile phones and has the great price of FREE. In the past two years of use, it has save me tremendous amount of time and has kept me organized with the several areas of my life.

In any case, thank you for making this list available!
